Zirocnia Ceramics:
There are three ways to induce microcracks in martensitic transformations containing zirconia materials:
(1) The monoclinic phase of zirconia is a tetragonal phase at a higher sintering temperature, and a tetragonal phase-monoclinic phase martensitic transformation occurs during cooling, and microcracks are generated around the particles;
(2) The tetragonal zirconia grains have a grain size r greater than the critical phase change size r due to the excessively high sintering temperature, and the spontaneous phase changes to monoclinic zirconia during the cooling process, resulting in microcracks;
(3) The tetragonal phase zirconia is transformed into monoclinic zirconia under stress conditions. The mechanism of this toughening method is to place some obstacles on the extended path of the crack, hinder the movement of the crack, and change the direction when the crack propagates. These barriers may be second phase particles, or stress concentrations or residual stresses generated by the second phase. When the crack propagation is hindered, the crack may bend at this time, trying to continue to expand around the obstacle; the crack may also be bifurcated and deflected, and the obstacle will continue to expand completely. Due to the bending action of the crack, it plays an important role in improving the toughness of the material. The crack deflection and bending toughening mechanism is a temperature-independent toughening effect, but when the residual stress is due to internal component thermal mismatch, crack deflection and bending toughness are related to temperature.
