The surface t-ZrO2 ceramic particles are less constrained, and the particles are easily converted from t-ZrO2 to m-ZrO2, but the t-ZrO2 inside the matrix is still metastable under pressure in different directions. The m-ZrO2 on the surface of the material is much more than the m-ZrO2 inside the material matrix, and the volume effect caused by the phase change accumulates on the surface of the material to form residual compressive stress, which can offset the applied partial tensile stress and thus strengthen the surface toughening. The existing phase transformation toughening mechanism has extremely strong temperature sensitivity, and the toughening effect at high temperature is greatly limited, especially the stress-induced phase transformation toughening is basically failure in the high temperature region. Therefore, how to expand the effective temperature range of the existing mechanism and seek a new phase change toughening mechanism will be the key to solving the problem of high temperature toughening.
