Zirconia Ceramic:
The transition between the ZrO2 tetragonal phase and the monoclinic phase is a martensitic transformation, which has a volume expansion of 3 to 5% and a shear strain of 7 to 8% due to the transformation of the tetragonal phase into a monoclinic phase. [] Therefore, pure ZrO2 products tend to undergo a phase transition from t-ZrO2 to m-ZrO2 during the production process (cooling process from high temperature to room temperature) and cracks or even cracks accompanying volume changes, so it is not much Engineering value. However, when a suitable stabilizer (such as Y2O3, MgO2, CaO, CeO2, etc.) is added, the phase transition temperature of c-ZrO2 → t-ZrO2 and t-ZrO2 → m-ZrO2 can be lowered to stabilize the high temperature c-ZrO2. The phase with t-ZrO2 can also be stabilized or metastable at room temperature. When the amount of stabilizer added is sufficient, the high temperature stable c-ZrO2 can be kept at room temperature without phase change. Further studies have found that zirconia undergoes a martensitic transformation accompanied by changes in volume and shape, absorbs energy, slows stress concentration at the crack tip, prevents crack propagation, and improves ceramic toughness. Therefore, the research and application of zirconia phase transformation toughened ceramics have been rapidly developed. There are three types of zirconia transformation toughening ceramics, which are partially stabilized zirconia ceramics; tetragonal zirconia polycrystalline ceramics and zirconia toughened ceramics.
